After the creation of the independent Bulgarian Church, the Exarchate, in 1870, two factions were created in many Macedonian communities: the Patriarchists, meaning the followers of the Ecumenical Patriarch, and the Exarchists, meaning the Bulgarians. In most villages the efforts of the Exarchists to occupy the churches provoked the fierce reaction of the Patriarchists and led to violent confrontations.
