The medal consists of a square open cross, with a plate in the middle and two crossed swords between its arms. On the obverse it bears a crowned female head and the circular inscription “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE”, while on the reverse the dates 1914-1916. A ball is attached to the upper arm of the cross through which passes the ring that attaches the cross to the ribbon. The ribbon has alternating green and red lines and a brass laurel branch attached on it . There is also a large attachment pin.
