Black cotton overcoat (sayias) of the women’s traditional costume of Episkopi, Imathia. The round neckline and vertical front opening are trimmed with a narrow strip of red fabric. On the chest, both sides of the opening are embroidered with broken lines and geometric motifs in red, orange, yellow and white-blue. An embroidered red rosette has been added beneath the embroidery on each side. The ends of the sleeves, the cuffs, have a small opening and turn upwards, allowing the inner appliqued red fabric, called buhasi, to be seen. The fabric is embellished with white embroidery. The edges of the sleeves are trimmed with thin red tassels. At the bottom, on the sides, an opening helps the front panels, the “wings”, to fold towards the back, where they are secured at the waist. Red buhasi has been added to the inside of the vertical opening, which forms a right angle and extends to the side opening, covering the front corners at the same time. White and blue stitching forms details across the entire surface of the appliqued fabric, especially in the corners where a diamond-like geometric pattern is formed. The hem, from one side opening to the other, is richly embroidered with straight and curved lines and geometric patterns in red, yellow, orange, azure and white.
