Speeches of students of the Theological School of Halki on Sundays
ManuscriptIn the premises of the monastery of the Holy Trinity renovated by Patriarch Germanos IV, the same Patriarch founded the Holy Theological School of Chalkis (1844). It is no coincidence that around the middle of the 19th century. the first Orthodox Theological Schools are founded in the East: the University of Athens (1837), of Chalki (1844) and of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem (1855). The Theological School of Chalkis belongs to the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which has the same geographical area and holds the primacy among the other Orthodox Churches. It was founded, therefore, to serve the immediate needs of the Church of Constantinople and of Orthodoxy in general. A period quite extensive, covering about eight decades (1844-1919), and one of the most brilliant periods in the School's history from every angle. This is primarily due to the special position held by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Great Patriarchs, the hierarchy of the Throne, but also influential laymen and prefects took care of and took care of the best functioning and appearance of the School, as much as this was possible: persons worthy of mention, with the first Schoolmaster, the Metropolitan of Stavroupolis Konstantinos Typaldos (1844-1864) , who directed the School. The excellent graduates received scholarships and continued their studies in their specialty in the Orthodox Theological Academies of Russia and in the universities of the West and were then appointed professors at the Faculty. The high priests, who were summoned from the seat they held, constituted, to a great extent, the aristocracy of the hierarchy of the Throne. In 1971, during the years of the same Patriarch Athenagoras, by a decision of the Turkish authorities, the theological department of the School closed its doors. in this way another period begins, of unknown, so far, duration.
